The Bride with Backward Feet
A wedding procession returns one bride too many in this classic North Indian cautionary tale.
When the palki set down at the groom’s gate, the women sang. When they lifted the veil, the feet pointed the wrong way.
By morning the songs had stopped, and the peepal at the crossroads had a new story to keep.
Some say it was a Chudail who walked home with the procession. Others say it was a warning about looking carefully at what joy invites into the house. The archive keeps both tellings.
